MoCTA

Founded in 2017 by Lama Tashi Norbu, Leela Eleni Skitsa and the rest of the team, the Museum of Contemporary Tibetan Art (MoCTA) in Emmen was the first museum in the world to house and exhibit contemporary Tibetan art.

Through its permanent collection, events, workshops and exhibitions, MoCTA engages the public with inspirational content that is rooted in Tibetan culture.

The art collection consists mainly of work by Tibetans in diaspora or in exile along with Tibetan artists from Lhasa, Tibet. This makes MoCTA a museum dedicated to living artists, which is rather unique in the museum world.

Our collection

Our permanent collection consists of paintings, sculptures and photographs from a wide range of exceptional Tibetan artisans and artists of other nationalities who have Tibet as their subject.

We have a wall dedicated to HM the Dalai Lama and we display traditional clothing and utensils from Tibet, as well as a sand mandala and spiritual utensils from Tibetan Buddhism. Most contemporary art objects are made by Lama Tashi Norbu.

Sacred Tibetan Skin Art
by Lama Tashi Norbu

The Sacred Tibetan Skin Art by Lama Tashi Norbu will help you protect yourself against the impurities of ignorance, desire and hatred, known in Tibetan Buddhism as the ‘three emerging poisons’ that arise within ourselves. They also offer spiritual protection against diseases, enemies and physical obstacles.

Museum Shop

If you are seeking a unique gift that will be treasured by yourself or a loved one, the museum shop offers a wide range of giftable treasures, including Tibetan Buddhist amulets, statues, varjas and prayer wheels, alongside other items of jewellery, shawls and wraps from Tibet, paintings, posters, books and Tibetan prayer flags.
